Umm Ibrahim, an Iraqi IDP, lost her husband, and two of her sons were kidnapped by an extremist group. The loss of breadwinners in her family prompted her to take difficult measures as to the amount and type of food that she and her children eat, especially during Ramadan.
During Ramadan this year, Umm Ibrahim struggles to secure a livelihood for her family. She says: “One day I cook and another I don’t. During the whole of Ramadan, I only bought fruits twice for my children.”
The displaced mother adds: “My daughters and I work in a factory that manufactures cleaning products. I cook for about 20 workers, but what kind of job is this? I mean, it is not enough for doctor’s fees, medicine or food.”
Umm Ibrahim’s family is one of thousands of internally displaced Iraqi families who are experiencing similar hardships. In the face of the harshness of their reality, #EveryGiftCounts in Ramadan, and through your support, refugee and internally displaced families who are most in need will be able to secure their necessities to continue living with dignity and honour.
Umm Ibrahim herself wishes a bright future for her and her family: “I hope to see my family in a better situation. Our situation is not an enviable one.”
Today, you can dedicate your Zakat to refugee and internally displaced families that are most in need, in Iraq and other countries where humanitarian needs abound. Through the Refugee Zakat Fund App, 100% of your Zakat reaches its beneficiaries, without any administrative or operational expenses deducted, as UNHCR covers these expenses from funding other sources.
Zakat and Sadaqah donations received by UNHCR through the Refugee Zakat Fund in the past year (including during Ramadan), have helped more than 1.2 million refugees and IDPs and their families in more than 13 countries of asylum and displacement. #EveryGiftCounts this year as well in their lives.
